Our patented biorefining process transforms ocean overgrowth into high-performance, bio-based alternatives to ingredients traditionally sourced from fossil fuels, climate-sensitive plants, and land- and water-intensive crops.

Our platform enables the extraction of multiple valuable compounds. We recently launched two of our functional ingredients – OceanThix™ alginate and OceanBoost™ fucoidan – and additional products are already in the pipeline.

By removing harmful algal overgrowth and repurposing it as a renewable raw material, we are pioneering a zero-waste, circular economy model that regenerates marine ecosystems.

Marimekko and Origin by Ocean joined forces in a pilot project that substituted a synthetic thickener within the print paste with Origin by Ocean algae-based thickener. A set of textile products was printed with Origin by Ocean OceanThix™ alginate, a print paste thickener made from Sargassum from the Dominican Republic.

Thickeners play a crucial role in the textile printing process, as they are the main component in the paste. Testing the use of bio-based thickeners in Marimekkos printing process was a step toward the companys goal of reducing the amount of chemicals used in the supply chain.

The Ole Hyvä Meri series uses alginate produced from invasive seaweed collected from the Caribbean coast. The gentle and completely sulfate-free cleaning product family is designed with respect for marine ecosystems, and their use in everyday life reduces the nutrient load of oceans. The OceanThix™ alginate used in Meri products, isolated from algae, creates a film that protects the skin and maintains the skin’s moisture balance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is hydrogen sulfide? Does it impact Origin by Ocean’s products?
Hydrogen sulfide is described as a “colorless gas known for its pungent ‘rotten egg’ odor at low concentrations” (OSHA, n.d.). The gas is toxic and exposure to it can cause a range of health issues, from mild to severe. After 48 hours of reaching land, sargassum begins to rot, releasing harmful gases called hydrogen sulfide and ammonia (Nibbs, 2024).

This means that hydrogen sulfide is not present in the sargassum itself. The hydrogen sulfide is only released as a reaction when the sargassum is decomposing.

No, the hydrogen sulfide does not impact our products. Our sargassum is collected before it begins to rot, and is stored safely for transportation, meaning that the hydrogen sulfide is neither released nor present in our products.

Are Origin by Ocean’s PRODUCTS safe?

Yes, Origin by Ocean’s products are safe.

Sargassum can accumulate pesticides and heavy metals (including arsenic), so, in our biorefining process, we treat the sargassum in a way that removes the pollutants, ensuring that it is safe to use. Due to this process, our ingredients are safe and purified.

The heavy metals (including arsenic) that are removed from the sargassum are disposed of properly, according to our safety guidelines and local regulations.
