From Ocean Overgrowth to Industrial Breakthrough

As expectations around sustainability move from promises to proof, blue biotechnology is emerging as a credible path forward for the chemical industry. Impact Report 2025 shows how Origin by Ocean is translating ocean regeneration into industrial-scale impact.
From Ocean Overgrowth to Industrial Breakthrough
News

The chemical industry is at a crossroads.

For decades, performance has been built on fossil-based raw materials, resource-intensive crops, and extractive supply chains. Today, rising costs, regulatory pressure, and planetary limits are converging into one clear message: the old model no longer scales.

The next era of chemistry will not be defined by incremental improvements. It will be defined by new feedstocks, regenerative systems, and technologies that perform at industrial scale while restoring ecosystems.

This is where blue biotechnology moves from the margins to the main stage. And this is where Origin by Ocean operates.

Impact that starts where the problem is

Each year, tens of millions of tonnes of invasive sargassum wash onto Caribbean coastlines, damaging ecosystems, harming human health, and burdening local economies. Traditionally, this biomass has been treated as waste. Left to rot, it emits toxic gases and greenhouse emissions. Removed improperly, it shifts the problem elsewhere.

We see something different.

At Origin by Ocean, we start impact upstream, at the point of environmental stress. By harvesting invasive algae before it decomposes, we remove excess nutrients from marine ecosystems and prevent downstream harm. By processing it through our patented biorefining technology, we transform that same biomass into high-performance, bio-based, biodegradable ingredients that can replace fossil-derived chemicals across industries.

This is not offsetting impact.
This is rewiring value chains.

Beyond “sustainable”: building regenerative industrial systems

Sustainability has become a crowded word. Too often, it signals reduction rather than transformation. For Origin by Ocean, impact starts earlier in the value chain, at the point where environmental pressure is created, not after it has occurred. Our approach is grounded in regeneration: removing excess nutrients from marine ecosystems, avoiding land- and freshwater-intensive raw materials, and redesigning chemical production around circular, scalable systems. By embedding impact into the feedstock, process, and end use, we aim to change how chemicals are made, not just how their footprint is measured.

Through one industrial process, we convert nearly 100% of invasive algae biomass into multiple valuable outputs, including OCEANTHIX™ (alginate), OCEANBOOST™ (fucoidan), and nutrient-rich residue for future material applications. Each product is designed to meet real performance requirements in markets such as cosmetics, personal care, food, textiles, and beyond.

Just as importantly, our model integrates:

  • Ocean nutrient removal and ecosystem restoration

  • Reduced dependence on land, freshwater, and climate-sensitive crops

  • Transparent, collaborative supply chains that support local economies

  • Scalable production pathways aligned with industrial reality

Impact only matters if it scales. In 2025, our focus shifted decisively from validation to execution.

2025: the year blue biotech proved it can scale

Over the past year, Origin by Ocean moved from promise to proof.

We completed demo-scale production, generating critical operational data and validating our process end-to-end under real-world conditions. We launched our first pre-commercial ingredients globally. We advanced toward our first-of-a-kind (FOAK) biorefinery in partnership with CABB Group in Finland, laying the foundation for industrial-scale deployment.

At the same time, we strengthened our environmental, social, and governance frameworks, expanded international partnerships, and deepened engagement with customers moving toward concrete pre-commercial sales.

This combination matters.

Because leadership in the impact game isn’t about telling a better story.
It’s about delivering measurable outcomes while building systems that endure.

Redefining leadership in the chemical industry

The future chemical industry will be judged on more than price and performance. It will be judged on:

  • Ability to decarbonize value chains at scale

  • Responsible sourcing without competing with food systems or land use

  • Transparency across operations, impacts, and trade-offs

  • Readiness to operate within planetary boundaries

Blue biotech offers a powerful answer to these demands. But only if it is built with industrial discipline, scientific rigor, and a clear path to scale.

This is the standard we hold ourselves to.

Introducing our 2025 Impact Report

Our 2025 Impact Report captures a pivotal year in Origin by Ocean’s journey. It details not just what we achieved, but how we think about impact, where we are honest about challenges, and how we are preparing for the next phase of growth.

Inside the report, you’ll find:

  • Progress on scaling bio-based chemical production from demo to FOAK

  • Environmental impact across regenerative harvesting, process optimization, and product substitution

  • Economic and social impact across our supply chain and partnerships

  • Our approach to safety, governance, and long-term accountability

  • A clear view of what it takes to build a regenerative chemical company in practice

If you are working to transform materials, chemicals, or consumer goods.
If you are looking for scalable alternatives to fossil-based inputs.
If you believe the next competitive advantage will come from aligning performance with planetary health.

This report is for you.
